The Kōkua Initiative at Waiākea continues its efforts to impact the lives of people throughout the Hawaiian Islands and recently set a record in the process.
On the first Saturday of every month, we hold a drive at KTA Puainako in support of The Food Basket, Hawai’i Islands’ Foodbank, and a different non-profit partner or cause. The food that gets collected during the monthly drives gets distributed to the most vulnerable in Hilo.
Before the food is given out, it has to be packed for distribution.
For months, the Kōkua Initiative has joined the team at The Food Basket to help pack the food boxes. This past week, Volunteers from the Waiākea ‘ohana joined a group of community volunteers from JustServe Foundation, the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay, Rotary Club of Hilo, the Waiākea Lions, and the Hilo Crescent Lions to pack an all-time high 1050 boxes.
That’s the equivalent of 30 pallets worth of food, which shattered past the packing goal of 17 pallets!
Collaborating in this fashion just goes to show that when you live aloha and work together, anything is possible.
