The Mana Behind Waiākea Coffee

At Waiākea, our kuleana (the responsibility) to care for the ʻāina (land) and each other, is the compass that guides every choice we make. For us, sustainability isn’t a strategy or slogan. It’s what our company is built on, the commitment to doing what’s pono (right) for the earth, for our people, and for the next generation.

That’s why we’re honored to partner with the incredible team at Doma Coffee Roasting Company, whose craft fuels the coffee behind our ready-to-drink Waiākea Coffee. Their innovation doesn’t just align with our values; it inspires us to continue searching for partners who share our mission to build a more sustainable future.

Tucked away in the small town of Post Falls, Idaho, Doma set out to do something radical: roast extraordinary, organic, fair-trade coffee while drastically reducing its energy footprint. To make it happen, they invested in one of the most efficient roasters in the world, the Loring Smartroast Kestrel S35. This isn’t your average machine. It cuts natural gas use by 80%.

But they didn’t stop there. With the help of Avista Utilities’ “Every Little Bit” program, Doma conducted a comprehensive energy audit, explored available incentives, and performed a CO₂ impact analysis. The result? Over 250,000 pounds of CO₂ emissions gone.

So the next time you pop open a can of Waiākea Coffee, take a moment. That bold, smooth sip is doing more than just fueling your day. It’s:

  • Roasted with purpose, not excess

  • Crafted to preserve the bean’s essence and spirit, this means more flavor, less bitterness

  • Powered by clean, efficient technology that uplifts people and the planet
