It’s International Recycling Day, and if there’s one thing that gets us excited at Waiākea… It’s recycling!
Where does recycling in Hawai'i Go
Living on an island means we think about waste a little differently. Hawaiʻi doesn’t have large-scale recycling plants, so most of our recyclable materials are actually shipped off-island for processing. After sorting, they’re packed into shipping containers and sent to secondary processing centers on the continental U.S. and around the world.
It’s a reminder that recycling is bigger than what goes into the blue bin. It’s a global system, and every bottle you recycle here plays a part in that larger loop.
The more we thought about recycling, the more we thought about how we can do better. This is when Oceanplast® bottles came to life.
What is Oceanplast®
We’re proud that Waiākea’s Oceanplast® bottles are made from 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic. That means the material comes from coastal communities where plastic is at high risk of entering the ocean. This plastic is collected, cleaned, broken down, and transformed into high-quality rPET pellets, which are remade into new bottles and filled with your favorite volcanic water!
By choosing Oceanplast®, you help:
-
Reduce plastic pollution in vulnerable coastal regions
-
Support local collection programs in communities most impacted by waste
-
Lower carbon emissions compared to virgin plastic
- Create a truly circular packaging system
Why Recycling Still Matters
Recycling isn’t a perfect system, but it is one of the most effective tools we have to reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and keep plastic out of the ocean. Every small action helps, whether you're sorting at home, supporting brands using recycled materials, or choosing products that push sustainability forward.
Today’s a great day to celebrate progress and to remember that the choices we make every day matter.
